Midwife Register, 1896-1912 - VIEW HERE
Németh Katalin was born on 28 Mar 1870 in Rábahidvég, Vas megye, Hungary to Németh József and his wife, Ujvári Terézia. Katalin’s original baptismal record, which can be viewed here on entry #22, states she was married on 14 Apr 1888. Her first husband was a coachman [kocsis] named Kapitány Sándor. They had a daughter named Ilona on 4 Dec 1888 in Kemesmál, Vas megye, Hungary, whom unfortunately passed away only five days later.
It is uncertain when Kapitány Sándor passed away, but widowed Németh Katalin was remarried to a miller [molnár] named Süpöly Zsigmond on 9 Aug 1891 in Körmend, Vas megye, Hungary. Zsigmond was a single bachelor 21 years older than the widowed Katalin. Zsigmond also belonged to the Reformed religion, whereas Katalin was Roman Catholic. This second marriage record can be viewed here, entry #20. They had three known children:
1. Süpöly Zsigmond
b. 10 Jul 1892, Hegyhát-Szent-Jakab, Vas megye, Hungary
d. May 1951, Morris Plains, Morris county, New Jersey, USA
m. Stein Anna
2. Süpöly Erzsébet
b. 23 Oct 1894, Körmend, Vas megye, Hungary
d. [no death record located in Körmend]
3. Süpöly Erzsébet
b. 23 Oct 1895, Körmend, Vas megye, Hungary
d. New Jersey, USA?
m. 1913, New Jersey, USA to Győri Ferencz
A death record cannot be located for Süpöly Zsigmond in Körmend, between October 1895 (the birth of their last child) and 1 Feb 1897, when Katalin was remarried for a third time to an assistant boot-maker [csizmadia segéd] named Klement János. The marriage record does not state whether Katalin was divorced or widowed, only that she was a certified midwife [okleveles bába] residing in Körmend. This third marriage record can be viewed here.
On 18 Feb 1912, Katalin Klement and daughter Erzsébet left the port of Cuxhaven, Germany aboard the SS Amerika. They landed at Ellis Island in NYC only nine days later on February 27th. Katalin is described on the passenger manifest as being 40 years old, standing as 5’5″, with a fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. Katalin and Erzsébet were destined to their husband and step-father, “Janos Klement,” in Elizabeth, Union county, New Jersey. The passenger manifest also states Katalin was leaving behind her “stepson” named “Sypöly Zsigmund” in Körmend; from baptismal records we know this is Katalin’s biological child. The passenger manifest can be viewed here, lines #26-27.
I’ve so far been unable to locate Klement János and Németh Katalin in the 1915 New Jersey state census. Katalin’s daughter Erzsébet was married two years prior, in 1913, and cannot be located either. It also appears that Katalin passed away before the 1920 federal census. Her death can be found in the New Jersey state death indexes and she appears as “Katherine Klement,” having passed away in June 1919 in Union county, New Jersey. Katalin’s husband, Klement János, cannot be located within the death indexes.
MIDWIFE REGISTER - CONTENTS
The register contains information regarding approximately 898 births, presumably with all information written in Németh Katalin’s own handwriting, dating from 1896 to 1912. The earliest entries are for births from localities near Pozsony, present-day Bratislava, Slovakia. However, around August 1896, Katalin begun delivering children almost exclusively in Körmend, Vas megye, Hungary. The last entry is in January 1912, indicative of Katalin’s emigration from Europe the following month. There are Körmend civil registry office seals in blue ink for 11 of the 17 years included in the register.
